Preschool Swim Classes
A/ Water Discovery (parent/child)
6-24 Months
Water Discovery/ Shrimp (6-24 month) YMCA introductory swim lesson will educate parents on water safety for the whole family, proper handling of their children in the water, and skills that can be utilized around any body of water. The swim lesson instructor will introduce skills like blowing bubbles and submerging and will help develop motor skills that will lead to a lifelong enjoyment in the water. Children that are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper.
B/Water Exploration (parent/child)
12-36 Months
Water Exploration/ Perch (12-36 months) is a YMCA swim lesson class for a child who is acclimated to the water and is beginning to make their way into the water with little to no help. The swim lesson will continue educating the parent on water safety, proper handling of their child in the water and skills that can be utilized around any body of water. This swim lesson will continue to develop the motor skills, breath control and submerging, and will help toddlers begin to develop independent swimming.
1/Water Acclimation – Pike
3-5 Years-Beginner I
1/Water Acclimation – Pike (3-5 Years) Beginner I is a YMCA swim lesson class that the parents need not be in the water for this swim lesson. This swim lesson helps children adjust to the water and learn pool safety. In order to complete this swim lesson level, children must submerge themselves without hesitation and float on both their front and back for pre-designated period of time. Children will also begin glides and kicking on their front and back.
2/Water Movement – Eel
3-5 Years-Beginner II
Water Movement swim lessons are for Children who are comfortable going under water and have experience in swimming lessons. Eels focus on basic freestyle and elementary backstroke during the swim lesson. YMCA Eel swim lessons are for children between the age of 3-5 beginner II.
3-4/ Stroke Introduction – Rays/Starfish
3-5 Years-Advanced
Children improve freestyle and learn more personal safety and rescue skills, and build endurance. Rays focus on rotary breathing and are introduced to backstroke. Starfish offers an introduction to diving and treading water, and also to deep water swimming skills.
